Wellington Drive Around Work Weekend
23rd/24th July 16
Words by James Trembath and video by Will Overton

We took a break from our traditional move to Wellington in the Spring last year as the site was undergoing some extensive reworks with various track changes and tree felling. With that now completed we were invited back this Jul to open up the tracks and make some new routes for the remaining season.

We were joined by some regulars for the weekend to help clear the old tracks of brash, rework some of the routes and to find some new climbs and descents to work into the days outings.

Our Wellington site really is a little gem. Unlike Bampton where we aim to cover a fair distance over the course of the day we are running over a much smaller area but with just as many tracks all interlocking and providing some great entertainment and challenging terrain. The ground there is difficult to read at times. The leaf mulch and peat are hard enough to negotiate and with green sand also underling a large proportion of the site you don’t want too aggressive a tyre that will start digging big holes if you get stuck! The tracks soon change with the passage of vehicles, some improving, some getting a little harder!

Known as the more technically challenging site we were keen to get back up to Wellington to make the tracks usable. Brash from the cut timber being the most potentially damaging commodity up there, (especially for brake pipes!) and this took the majority of the time to clear, a few larger limbs and trees had to be winched clear as we constructed new routes through the cover.

Even on a Drive Round work weekend not everything goes to plan! Sam’s pond was a great mass of peat like silt that gripped the lead vehicle hard as it opened up the route and one CV later a winch was needed to clear the obstacle! But these things happen and at least it was at the end of Sundays clearance!

With the routes now open and dates being confirmed keep an eye on our diary pages for upcoming places at the Wellington site Drive Round Days. To give you an insight please watch our short Drive Round Days Advert video that was partially filmed during the weekend.
