Wrangler TJ Jeep aka "The Model T" Modified Class Challenge |
|
The development of my Jeep started in 1997, approximately four weeks after it was collected from the Jeep dealer in Bristol.
Since then the Jeep has been through many stages of evolution, involving both custom and bought (some good and some bad) upgrades.
For the first five years I was pretty happy driving around offroad sites, after that I gradually drifted into punch hunting.
Apart from myself, the two people who have influenced the Jeep are Mark Gasser of Off Road MDG and latterly Ivor Daniels. Mark is an excellent engineer who is responsible for the Jeeps suspension, transmission, customer steering and axles while Ivor takes care of pretty much everything else. I was first introduced to Ivor by David Lovejoy, my intention being to get Ivor to make me a rear winch bumper. This never happened! Within a few minutes of discussing my requirements and looking over the Jeep we decided that the Jeeps departure angle was not going to be compromised, the rear winch had to be inset into the tub. To cut along story short I now consider Ivor to be a good friend, apart from the body work modifications listed below, Ivor helps look after the Jeep, keeping it on the road and ready to compete. The Jeep, known affectionately as the "Model T" due to its side profile, is used regularly for both competitive and non-competitive events. The Jeeps pretty well travelled, it’s been to France, Spain, Sweden and Ireland, 2008 will be my fifth Steve Maddisons. Myself and Sam Fletcher acting as my WB can often can be seen competing in 4x4 Adventure Winch Challenges, events we throughly enjoy. As well as being an excellent WB Sam, Sam has suggested quite afew little Jeep enhancements, all of which have been adopted. If you have any questions about turning a Jeep into a challenge capable truck I suggest you join J33P.org, membership is free. J33P is the home of the largest UK offroading Jeep community and a superb source of information, not that I am at all biased, being one of the founders! The list of modifications to my Jeep may looking daunting. However please remember I compete in the modified class, far less modifications are required to compete in the Std and Std+1 classes.
